Job Description:

Contract to start ASAP until 01-09-27 with a possible extension.

We are seeking a compassionate, organised and highly professional Coroner's Officer to support the HM Senior Coroner in investigating sudden, unexplained, violent and unnatural deaths. This is a rewarding and varied role where you will manage coronial investigations from initial referral through to inquest, working closely with bereaved families, police, medical professionals and partner agencies.

You will play a key role in gathering evidence, managing complex case files, coordinating investigations and providing essential support during inquests, ensuring all statutory and legal requirements are met while delivering a sensitive and professional service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of coronial investigations from referral through to conclusion.
  • Conduct initial enquiries and gather evidence relating to reportable deaths.
  • Liaise with bereaved families, providing clear information and compassionate support throughout the coronial process.
  • Obtain and review medical records, police reports, witness statements and other relevant documentation.
  • Arrange post-mortem examinations and liaise with pathologists, police and healthcare professionals.
  • Prepare case files and documentation for inquests, pre-inquest reviews and court hearings.
  • Attend inquests, providing administrative and operational support to the Coroner.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and paper records using coronial case management systems.
  • Work collaboratively with police, NHS organisations, funeral directors, local authorities and other partner agencies.
  • Participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota, including weekends and bank holidays where required.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a legal, investigative, police, healthcare, coronial or public sector environment.
  • Excellent organisational and case management skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to deal sensitively with bereaved families.
  • Ability to manage complex and confidential information with accuracy and discretion.
  • Experience preparing reports, statements and legal documentation.
  • Strong IT skills and experience using case management systems.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and make sound judgements.
  • A professional, empathetic and resilient approach to working in sensitive circumstances.
