Duration: 20 weeks with a possible extension.
Job Purpose
The Major Project Officer (Planning) plays a key role in supporting the delivery of major development projects across the boroughs.
The post holder will manage and coordinate planning activities relating to significant residential, commercial, mixed-use, infrastructure, and regeneration schemes, ensuring that developments are progressed in accordance with planning policy, legislative requirements, and strategic objectives.
The role requires effective engagement with developers, consultants, elected members, statutory consultees, and local communities to facilitate high-quality development and sustainable growth.
The candidate will be handling a varied case load of major planning applications.
This could be a mixture of residential (potentially large or strategic major scale), commercial or energy-related developments.
The candidate will not be a line manager but will mentor a planner/senior planner and have delegated authority to determine applications where the case officer is the person they are mentoring.
Responsibilities
Manage a portfolio of major planning applications and strategic development projects from pre-application stage through to determination and implementation.
Provide professional planning advice to developers, stakeholders, and internal departments regarding major development proposals.
Coordinate pre-application discussions and development management processes to ensure efficient project delivery.
Assess planning applications, environmental statements, technical reports, and supporting documentation for major developments.
Prepare comprehensive officer reports, recommendations, committee reports, and briefing papers.
Present planning applications and recommendations at Planning Committee meetings and other stakeholder forums.
Negotiate planning obligations, conditions, and legal agreements where appropriate.
Liaise with statutory consultees, government agencies, infrastructure providers, and other key stakeholders.
Monitor project milestones and ensure compliance with statutory timescales and performance targets.
Contribute to the development and implementation of planning policies, guidance documents, and regeneration initiatives.
