Duration: 35 days with a possible extension.

Job Purpose

The post holder will be responsible for assessing travel assistance applications against criteria set out in Southwark's Travel Assistance Policy.

For those that are assessed as eligible, an assessment will be made on suitable travel assistance taking into account individual needs and costs.

Responsibilities:

To maintain a fully integrated travel assistance application process that caters for children and young adults that the local authority has a duty to provide travel assistance to (currently 0 - 25 years).

To ensure all travel assistance documentation is clear, easy to access for all stakeholders, is up to date and has been coordinated with other teams, as appropriate, to ensure a joined up approach across the local authority.

To assess the eligibility of all applicants in accordance with the travel assistance policy and make recommendations accordingly.

Where an applicant is found to be eligible for assistance, to propose the most cost-effective mode of assistance, according to the applicants' needs.

In order to assess eligibility for an individual applicant, to visit, when necessary, their educational setting and observe them and/or accompany them on their journey to and from this establishment

To lead on the publicising of service initiatives with families, to achieve the best possible outcome, for both children and young adults, with the emphasis on supporting families to have less dependence on transport, e.g. through independent travel training, personal transport budgets, etc. and promoting independence for all service users

To publicise the transport assistance process to internal stakeholders, including schools, social workers and other council officers, to ensure they are aware of how to access the service.

To coordinate the investigation and draft response to complaints made to transport, including MPs enquiries and Local Government Ombudsman investigations
