West Sussex is looking for an experienced Trading Standards Professional to act as the investigating officer for a piece of work looking at the workings of a trade sector impacting across the County area.

You will work closely with the Operational Manager and legal advisors to progress the scale and direction of the investigation, considering both criminal and civil enforcement as required.

You must be a qualified and experienced Trading Standards Professional holding one of the recognised professional qualifications.

As a Senior Trading Standards Officer, you will have a wide knowledge of trading standards legislation and a number of years post qualification experience.

At this level, you will also be expected to provide a guidance role to less experienced officers in relation to legislative queries, and may be asked to act as a service knowledge lead for a legislative area (e.g. metrology, food standards, feed, product safety) or other work area/s as deemed necessary.

You would deal with the most complex / technical legislative issues within the subject area, and you may be asked to attend TTCG Planning Group for your professional input.

You will be asked to conduct interventions with businesses to ascertain regulatory compliance and to act as an investigating officer, including more complex cases appropriate to your higher level of experience.

In addition to carrying out the roles of a Grade 9 Trading Standards Officer, you may also be asked to represent the Service on national professional groups, liaise with testing houses and manage related invoicing, manage the Services covert accounts and laptops and monitor planned spending.

You will be required to give evidence at Court as necessary. You may be required to occasionally lift or carry heavy items, for example when manually handling stock in a warehouse or carrying bags of seized evidence

The job may involve some exposure to disagreeable and unpleasant persons and/or environmental conditions due to the nature of the regulatory compliance role being performed.

The nature of the work may require lengthy periods of concentration in order to determine answers to queries and provide advice and information as necessary.

You will need to be able to travel independently to various locations across the county.

There is a regular and intrinsic requirement to communicate in English with members of the public.
