Civil Lawyer
Job Description:
Contract to start ASAP
Duration: 12 weeks with a possible extension.
Job Purpose
To provide high-quality legal advice and representation on a wide range of civil law matters, supporting the Council in delivering effective and lawful services.
The role involves handling complex casework, advising internal departments, and representing the Council in court where required.
Responsibilities
Provide legal advice on civil litigation matters including housing, debt recovery, anti-social behaviour, and judicial review
Manage a varied caseload of civil law matters from instruction through to resolution
Represent the Council in court, tribunals, and hearings
Draft legal documents including pleadings, witness statements, and agreements
Advise council officers and senior management on legal risks and compliance
Conduct legal research and keep up to date with changes in legislation and case law
Negotiate settlements and liaise with external legal representatives when required
Ensure all work is carried out in line with professional standards and council policies
