Job Purpose

The Refuse Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of refuse collection vehicles, ensuring the timely collection and transportation of household, commercial, and recyclable waste across designated routes.

The role supports the delivery of high-quality environmental services while maintaining compliance with health and safety legislation, road traffic regulations, and Council policies.

Responsibilities

Safely operate refuse collection vehicles in accordance with road traffic legislation and Council procedures.

Complete scheduled waste and recycling collection routes efficiently, ensuring service standards and collection targets are met.

Conduct daily vehicle inspections and safety checks before, during, and after each shift, reporting defects promptly.

Work closely with refuse loaders and other crew members to ensure safe and effective collection operations.

Transport collected waste and recyclable materials to designated disposal or recycling facilities.

Ensure waste is collected safely, minimising disruption to residents, businesses, and road users.

Respond professionally to enquiries from members of the public and escalate service issues where appropriate.

Report missed collections, access issues, vehicle defects, accidents, and health and safety concerns through the appropriate reporting channels.

Follow safe manual handling practices and contribute to maintaining a safe working environment for the collection crew.

Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, waste management procedures, and Council policies.

Maintain accurate records relating to vehicle use, route completion, fuel usage, and daily operational activities.

Valid Category C (Class 2) Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driving licence
